This invention relates to novel compositions and a novel process for removing toxic resin acids and their derivatives from water and waste water effluent. In one specific aspect, the invention pertains to novel compositions and a novel process for removing toxic resin acids from effluent of pulp and paper mills. A composition for treating effluent comprising: (a) a water soluble nonionic polyalkylene ether containing lower alkyl groups in the alkyl chain and having a molecular weight exceeding 50,000; and (b) an ionic water-soluble polymer having a molecular weight exceeding about 10,000.

L'invention concerne des compositions nouvelles et un procédé nouveau pour l'élimination des acides résiniques toxiques et de leurs dérivés de l'eau et des effluents d'eaux usées. Sous un aspect précis, l'invention a trait à des compositions nouvelles et à un procédé nouveau pour l'élimination des acides résiniques toxiques des effluents des usines de pâtes et papiers. Une composition pour le traitement des effluents comprenant : (a) un polyéther d'alkylène non ionique soluble dans l'eau contenant des groupements alkyles légers dans la chaîne d'alkyles et ayant un poids moléculaire excédant 50 000; et (b) un polymère ionique soluble dans l'eau ayant un poids moléculaire excédant environ 10 000 est dévoilée.
