Compositions for the protective treatment of wood against rot and attack by insects which comprise at least the following components: a) 10-90 parts of coal-tar oil b) 2-20 parts of a biocidally active quaternary ammonium compound c) 10-90 parts of water. are described. The compositions according to the invention are easily preparable stable emulsions which are distinguished, inter alia, by good penetrability, strongly reduced odour of the treated woods, absence of annoying tar oil enrichments at the surface and strongly reduced "bleeding" of the treated wood at hot temperatures, considerably enhanced activity in spite of a lower coal-tar oil content and reduced toxicity compared to pure coal-tar oil.

L'invention concerne des agents pour traiter le bois afin de le protéger contre la putréfaction et l'attaque des insectes. Ces agents contiennent au moins les constituants suivants: a) 10 à 90 parties d'huile de goudron de houille, b) 2 à 20 parties d'un composé d'ammonium quaternaire à action biocide, c) 10 à 90 parties d'eau. Ces agents se présentent sous la forme d'émulsions stables, faciles à produire, qui se distinguent entre autres par un bon pouvoir de pénétration, une forte réduction des odeurs des bois traités, l'absence de concentrations gênantes d'huile de goudron à la surface, et une réduction importante de l'exsudation du bois traité à des températures estivales, un accroissement important de leur efficacité en dépit d'une teneur réduite en huile de goudron de houille et une réduction de la toxicité par rapport à l'huile de goudron de houille pure.
