A composition for passivating a metal substrate is provided. The composition is prepared by mixing together; (a) Group IIIB or IVB metal compound; and (b) a reaction product of an epoxy group-containing polymer or oligomer, a hydroxy functional acid and a dialkanolamine. The compositions, which are substantially free of chrome, are used to treat metal substrates prior to the application of a protective or decorative coatings.

L'invention concerne une composition de passivation d'un substrat métallique. Cette composition est préparée par mélange: a) d'un composé métallique du groupe IIIB ou IVB; et b) d'un produit de réaction d'un polymère ou oligomère contenant un groupe époxyde, d'un acide à fonction hydroxy et d'un dialcanolamine. Ces compositions, sensiblement exemptes de chrome, sont utilisées pour traiter des substrats métalliques préalablement à l'application d'un revêtement protecteur ou décoratif.
