The present invention concerns compositions for pipeline scraping pistons useful for separating different hydrocarbons transmitted in a single pipeline. These compositions are aqueous compositions comprising a gel of water soluble cellulosic ether cross-linked with a cross linking agent selected from zirconium salts, organic compounds of titanium and dialdehydes such as glyoxal. Such compositions form pipeline scraping pistons which may be manufactured and eliminated within the pipeline wherein they are used.
