ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel composition for the encapsulation of particles is provided herein. The composition includes at least one particle, such particle comprising an active-substance-containing, solid or liquid core encapsulated by a polymer or copolymer. The composition is obtained by treating at least one solid or liquid, active-substance-containing particle by adsorbing thereon at least one amphipathic compound. Such amphipathic compound either is capable of acting as an initiator in cationic polymerisations or, if the amphipathic compound is not itself capable of acting as an initiator in cationic polymerisations, then the amphipathic compound is activated with a Bronsted or Lewis acid so that it can function as an initiator in cationic polymerisations. Such at least one treated particle is then encapsulated by the in situ polymerisation or copolymerisation thereon of at least one cationically-polymerisable monomer or prepolymer. This provides, for example, a controlled release composition which can provide sustained or pulsatile rates of release of active substances.
