A B S T R A C T The present invention is directed to a fire- -retardant composition for cellulosic substrates comprising a polyalkylenepolya??ne having a number average molecular weight of at least 1,000 and preferably between 25,000 and 100.000, and a four-component inorganic salt formulation consisting of ammonium sulfate, boric acid, and two components from the group consisting of a zinc halide, an alkali metal dichromate, diammonium phosphate and an alkali metal tetra- borate. The claimed compositions not only impart fire retardancy to the cellulosic substrate, but also possess considerable resistance to leaching of salts from the substrate and are less hygroscopic than previous known formulations.
