A composition useful as a lubricant or cutting fluid includes: an oil of lubricant viscosity; the adduct of a polycarboxylic compound such as hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic anhydride with a hydroxy-containing amine; an active sulphur-containing organic compound such as a sulfurized olefin; and an alkali metal- or alkaline earth metal-containing compound. The composition exhibits reduced hydrogen sulfide generation.
