The invention relates to complexes of deprotonated hyaluronic acid with 3d metal ions of the 4th period of the Periodic Table, preferably zinc or cobalt ions, and compositions containing these complexes as active ingredients. The invention also provides a process for the preparation of the complexes, and compositions (both pharmaceutical and cosmetic) containing these complexes as active ingredients. In these compositions, zinc or cobalt hyaluronate preferably is used as active ingredient.
