Compositions containing vitamin E compounds in addition to carotenoid compounds. It is favorable to take these compounds in such a manner as to have 1 to 100 mg/day of the carotenoid compound(s) and 10 to 200 mg/day of the vitamin E compound(s). In case of administering capsules each containing 10 mg of natural lycopene, 6 mg of natural .beta.-carotene, 3 mg of natural .alpha.- carotene, and 1 mg of other natural carotenoids and .alpha.-tocopherol to patients with cirrhosis for 5 years, the test group showed an incidence of liver cancer 1/3 times as high as the control group. Namely, it has been proved for the first time that these compositions are significantly efficacious in preventing liver cancer in humans.
L'invention concerne une composition contenant des composés de vitamine E et des composés caroténoïdes. Il est avantageux d'administrer ces composés de sorte que les sujets absorbent 1 à 100 mg/jour de composé(s) caroténoïde(s) et de 10 à 200 mg/jour de composé(s) de vitamine E. Lors de l'administration de capsules, contenant chacune 10 mg de lycopène naturel, 6 mg de .beta.-carotène naturel, 3 mg d'.alpha.-carotène naturel, et 1 mg d'autres caroténoïdes naturels et de l'.alpha.-tocophérol, à des patients atteints de cirrhose depuis 5 ans, le groupe testé a présenté une incidence de cancer du foie représentant 1/3 de celle du groupe témoin. Pour la première fois, l'efficacité de ces compositions dans la prévention du cancer du foie chez des sujets humains a été mise en évidence.
