Compositions and method including a visual marker for monitoring patient compliance with a medication regimen. The marker is formulated with a rapid dissolve layer and adhered to, or ingested with, an orally administrable medicament. Upon ingestion, the marker is released causing a detectable marker-induced property in the oral and/or pharyngeal cavity of a subject. By examining the patient's oral and/or pharyngeal cavity and articles associated with the patient, one can determine whether the medicament has been ingested based upon the presence or absence of the property. The composition is also useful for tracking the location of an uningested medicament.
