A new latent polymerization initiator that becomes active upon exposure to the natural atmosphere comprises - N-alkyl-substituted tert-arylamines containing at least one aliphatic CH bond in the .alpha.-position; - metal compounds that are at least partly soluble in the material to be initiated and that accelerate the drying of unsaturated oils; and - compounds of weakly acidic carboxylic acids having pKa values of no less than about 0.9, which can be hydro- lyzed to the free carboxylic acid on contact with moisture. Such a latent polymerization initiator can be used in a wide variety of applications, including one-part or multi- part anaerobic adhesives that are storage stable in the absence of air, molding compounds, and surface coatings.
