A sterically hindered quaternary ammonium composition is prepared by contacting a solvent having hydroxyl functionality, a halohydrin, and a sterically hindered tertiary amine, under reaction conditions sufficient to produce a sterically hindered quaternary ammonium compound. The reaction proceeds with excellent yield. The resulting compounds are particularly useful for inhibiting formation of hydrates in hydrocarbon reservoirs and pipelines. Novel compositions of matter include sterically hindered quaternary ammonium compounds conforming to the formulas C27H58XNO2 and C29H63XNO2, wherein X is a halogen.

L'invention concerne une composition d'ammonium quaternaire à encombrement stérique, préparée par la mise en contact d'un solvant doté d'une fonctionnalité hydroxyle, d'une halohydrine et d'une amine tertiaire à encombrement stérique, dans des conditions réactionnelles suffisantes pour produire un composé d'ammonium quaternaire à encombrement stérique. La réaction se déroule avec un excellent rendement. Les composés résultants sont particulièrement utiles pour inhiber une formation d'hydrates dans des réservoirs et des conduites d'hydrocarbures. Les nouvelles compositions de matière comprennent des composés d'ammonium quaternaire à encombrement stérique conformes aux formules C<SUB>27</SUB>H<SUB>58</SUB>XNO<SUB>2</SUB> et C<SUB>29</SUB>H<SUB>63</SUB>XNO<SUB>2</SUB>, où X est un halogène.
