The present invention related to compositions including berberine or derivatives thereof of formula (1) (where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12 and X are as defined in claim 1) and/or polymeric dialdehyde chosen from compounds such as dialdehyde polysaccharides (such as oxidised cellulose (oxycellulose) or oxidized starch (oxystarch) or poly(acrolein/acrylic acid) for the treatment of gastrointestinal functional disorders and related conditions, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome; Inflammatory Bowel Disease; Colitis,Crohn~s disease and/or for promoting weight gainin animals including humans.
