Catalysts comprising phosphorus, vanadium, oxygen and a component which is a mixture of (A) titanium,zirco- nium, hafnium, or mixtures of these elements and (B) lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium and francium and mixtures thereof,were found to be particularly useful for the conversion of saturated hydrocarbons having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms to maleic anhydride. The selectivity, yield and productivity of these catalysts for the production of maleic anhydride are outstanding. The catalysts are par- ticularly oeneficial for the conversion of butane to maleic anhydride.
