ABSTRACT A composition of matter having the formula UO2AA'Ln n being 0 or 1, wherein A and A' comprise anions whose con- jugate acids have boiling points of less than about 200°C and pKa values of 4.8 or lower, L comprises a neutral ligand having a boiling point of less than about 190°C and an equi- librium constant for exchange with tetrahydrofuran ranging from about 10-3 to 103, A, A' and L combine to satisfy five or six coordination sites of said uranium atom. Also described is a process for producing a composition matter of the formula Image where L is a neutral ligand selected from isopropanol, ethanol, isobutanol, tert-butanol, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, acetone, dimethylformamide, n-propanol and ethylacetate which comprises one of the following: 1) combining uranyl chloride with hexafluoroacetyl- acetonate dissolved in said ligand; 2) forming an aqueous solution of a UO2-containing salt; adjusting the pH of said aqueous solution to between 0 and 7 and combining the resultant aqueous solution with a solution containing hexafluoroacetylacetonate and said ligand; and separating said composition of matter from the solution con- taining hexafluoroacetylacetonate and said ligand; or 3) reacting uranyl chloride with hexafluoroacetylace- tonate in the presence of a solvent to form uranyl hexa- fluoroacetylacetonate; separating the uranyl hexafluoro- acetylacetonate from the solvent' and dissolving said uranyl hexafluoroacetylacetonate in said ligand to form said composition of matter. These compositions are useful in processes for the separation of isotopes.
