ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disposable personal care articles, such as diapers, can be rendered compostable by utilizing a backsheet comprising a layered film material which is water-resistant for a period of time sufficient to prevent wetting of the user's skin, yet which breaks down in a composting environment. Layered film materials suitable for this purpose include films having a polyvinyl alcohol base layer and an outer coating of polyvinylidene chloride which is preferably adhered to the polyvinyl alcohol base layer with an intermediate primer material layer. Suitable primer materials include cross- linked polyesters or polyurethanes. - 12 -
