Methods of treating an individual with Alzheimer's disease by administering to the patient a therapeutically effective dose of a compound which interferes with the interaction between Alzheimer .beta.-protein and Apolipoprotein E4 or .alpha.1-antichymotrypsin, thereby suppressing the formation of Alzheimer .beta.-protein filaments and the neurotoxic effects of these filaments. The present invention also refers to methods of screening for compounds which are effective drugs for treating Alzheimer's disease. These methods comprise screening for compounds which suppress the formation of Alzheimer .beta.- protein filaments in the presence of promoting factors and which suppress the neurotoxic effects of these filaments formed in the presence of promoting factors.
Procédés de traitement d'un individu atteint de la maladie d'Alzheimer par administration d'une dose thérapeutiquement efficace d'un composé intervenant dans l'interaction entre la .beta.-protéine d'Alzheimer et l'apolipoprotéine E4 ou .alpha.¿1?-antichymotrypsine, ce qui supprime la formation des filaments de la .beta.-protéine d'Alzheimer et les effets neurotoxiques de ces filaments. L'invention concerne également des procédés de recherche de composés par criblage, qui sont des médicaments efficaces dans le traitement de la maladie d'Alzheimer. Ces procédés consistent à rechercher par criblage des composés supprimant la formation des filaments de la .beta.-protéine d'Alzheimer en présence de facteurs de promotion, ainsi que les effets neurotoxiques de ces filaments, qui se forment en présence de facteurs de promotion.
