This invention relates to the treatment of diarrhea and related conditions caused by pathogenic E. coli infection. More specifically, this invention is drawn to the unexpected discovery that by administering a composition which binds and removes the shiga like toxins (SLT) produced by pathogenic E. coli whenever an antibiotic is administered, improved treatment is provided. Novel compositions containing both antibiotic and toxin binding composition and methods of treatment which use simultaneous administration toxin binding composition whenever antibiotic is administered are provided. These compositions and methods kill the enteric E. coli organisms which produce the conditions and neutralize the SLT produced by the organisms and/or released from the organisms when they are killed. Thus, these compositions and methods are better able to ameliorate the symptoms of the infection and inhibit progression of this infection into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) than conventional treatment.

L'invention concerne le traitement de la diarrhée et d'états apparentés, induits par l'infection à E. coli pathogène. Elle porte notamment sur la découverte inattendue du fait que l'administration d'une composition qui fixe et supprime les toxines du type shiga (SLT) produites par E. coli pathogène lorsqu'un antibiotique est administré, permet d'améliorer le traitement. L'invention se rapporte aussi à des nouvelles compositions contenant un antibiotique et une composition fixant les toxines et à des méthodes de traitement, dans lesquelles la composition fixant les toxines est administrée simultanément, à chaque fois qu'un antibiotique est administré. Ces compositions et méthodes permettent de tuer les organismes E. coli entériques, à l'origine des états pathologiques, et de neutraliser les SLT produites par les organismes et/ou dégagées par les organismes lorsqu'ils sont tués. Ainsi, ces composition et méthodes sont mieux à même d'atténuer les symptômes de l'infection et d'inhiber la progression de celle-ci et sa transformation en syndrome hémolytique et urémique qu'un traitement classique.
