Compositions are provided containing molecules having at least one moiety from .beta.-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) lactic acid and/or caffeic acid, which are found in extracts from the plant genus Salvia, said moieties being of formula (I), the active agents having a molecular weight of at least 190 daltons. A class of preferred agents are those which are conjugated to form dimers, trimers, tetramers and larger polymers containing said moieties, with the most preferred being salvianolic acid dimers, trimers, tetramers and larger polymers. The compounds and compositions may be administered in pharmaceutically acceptable carriers and excipients systematically or locally to treat viral infections.
L'invention concerne des compositions contenant des molécules possédant au moins un fragment d'un acide .beta.-(3,4-dihydroxyphényle) lactique et/ou d'un acide caféique que l'on trouve dans des extraits de plantes du genre Salvia, ces fragments étant de la formule (I) et les agents actifs possédant un poids moléculaire d'au moins 190 daltons. Une classe d'agents préférés est constituée par ceux qui sont conjugués pour former des dimères, des trimères, des tétramères et des polymères plus grands contenant ces fragments, ces agents étant idéalement des dimères, trimères, tétramères et polymères plus grands d'acide salvianolique. On peut administrer les composés et compositions selon l'invention par des véhicules et des excipients acceptables du point de vue pharmaceutique, de manière systémique ou locale afin de traiter des infections virales.
