ABSTRACT The invention relates to a compound having the formula R-(CH2)a-S2O3-M+ or a hydrate of such a compound, where a has an integral value of from 1 to 20, and where (i) M+ represents a sodium ion or an equivalent of a divalent nickel ion and R represents hydroxy, cyano fluoro- phenyl, nitrophenyl, alkoxyphenyl, alkylphenyl, dialkylphenyl, benzoyl, phenoxy, halophenoxy, 2-phthalimido, a group having the formula C6H5CONH-, C6H5NHCO-, +M-OOC, or 2,4-dihydroxy-6- pyrimidyl (or its keto-form equivalent) or (ii) M+ is absent and R represents a grouping +H3N-. These compounds are useful in the bonding of rubber to metal.
