ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Compression of ultrasonic echo signals is effected to reduce their overall amplitude variation, thus enabling the echoes to be better interpreted and displayed on an echoscope. The compression is effected by a compression amplifier having a plurality of amplifying stages, each stage having a compression circuit in its output, adapted to compress an output signal which exceeds a pre-determined level, which level is progressively reduced in successive amplifying stages. Such a compression am- plifier is preferably used in conjunction with a derivative cir- cuit, which converts both long and short ultrasonic echo pulses into a single pulse for display purposes.
