A B S T R A C T A compression-ignition engine and a method for operating a compression ignition engine in which a mixture of air and methanol is provided in the combustion space. A pilot amount of diesel fuel is injected into the at least partially compressed mixture to start combustion. The temperature of the air or the air/methanol mixture is raised prior to compression by at least 25°C by preheating with waste heat from the engine. A cetane improver is also incorporated in the diesel fuel. - 1 -
