An elastomeric compression seal (10) for use in sealing an expansion joint in concrete pavement, the compression seal having first and second vertically aligned pairs of cells (12, 14; 16, 18) and a central vertically aligned pair of cells (20, 22) positioned between the outer pairs of cells. The upper cells (12, 16) in the outer pairs of cells are similarly shaped but oppositely directed and are horizontally aligned; likewise, the lower cells (14, 18) in the outer pairs of cells are similarly shaped but oppositely directed and are horizontally aligned. The upper cell (20) in the central pair of cells is positioned slightly below the upper cells (12, 16) in the outer pairs of cells, and the lower cell (22) in the central pair of cells is positioned slightly below the lower cells (14, 18) in the outer pairs of cells.
