ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A rotary compressor of the sliding vane type in which the refrigerating capacity at high speed opera- tion of the compressor is restrained by making use of the drop of the refrigerant pressure in the vane chamber down to a level below the pressure of the refrigerant supply source in the suction stroke of the compressor. The com- pressor has a rotor, vanes slidably carried by the rotor, a cylinder accommodating the rotor and the vane, plates fixed to the cylinder and closing opposite open ends of vane chambers defined by the rotor, the vanes and the cy- linder, and a suction port and a discharge port which pro- vide passages between the vane chambers and the outside of the compressor. A spacer for adjustment of the re- frigerating capacity is disposed in the suction port. When the compressor is used in an automobile air conditioner, it is possible to obtain a desired refrigerating capacity controlling characteristics of the compressor matching the characteristics of the engine and automobile, simply by selection of the spacer without substantially changing other parts of the compressor.
