A truck brake system air compressor improves fuel efficiency by reducing the parasitic horsepower load during an unloaded cycle. By using a ceramic valve member, having a decreased mass over current valve members, the valve lift can be increased thereby increasing the flow area past the valve seat. This reduces the horsepower required to run the compressor in the unloaded mode and reduces heat generation which is otherwise detrimental to other components of the compressor assembly. In addition, using a ceramic material provides a valve member that has a strength nearly equivalent to that of the conventional steel valve member, and allows alternative configurations to be used in an effort to increase the flow area through the inlet valve.
