A computer-based system and method for monitoring the profitability of a product-producing manufacturing plant, and for operating the plant in response to the output of the system. The method comprises storing a first plurality of data items (e.g. conversion cost data, production line capacity data, and plant-level operating capacity data) as setup data; receiving a second plurality of data items (e.g. customer data, product data, production data, sales data, profit/loss data, and target profit data) as input data associated with a plurality of time periods; calculating a plurality of profitability measures from the first and second plurality of data items; and outputting the measures to an user. Further aspects of the invention provide for determining projected performance measures associated with one or more proposed changes in production. In accordance with the real-time profitability measures and projected performance measures, pricing strategies, capital allocation priorities, asset utilization and manufacturing operations may be modified to enhance the profitability of the product- producing manufacturing plant.
