ABSTRACT A method is provided for controlling the feeding of wire to a workstation for the formation of a coil spring by means of at least one moveable work tool disposed at the workstation which includes the steps of providing a feed mechanism for feeding wire to the workstation and controlling the velocity of wire feed to optimize the rate of spring making. The step of controlling the velocity of wire feed in- cludes: sensing work tool movement, maintaining the velocity of wire feed in a predetermined velocity range during said work tool movement, and increasing the velocity of wire feed to a velocity greater than said predetermined velocity range upon termination of said work tool movement.
