COMPUTER DATA STORAGE METHOD ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A data formatting technique including the steps of formatting the contents and attributes of selected files and subdirectories comprising a file set into a sequence of headers respectively comprising a tag and data iden- tified by such tag, including headers containing file and subdirectory information common to a plurality of computer operating systems, which allows for transport of the stored data between different computer operating systems. The technique further includes the optional provision of operating system specific attributes headers for each selected file and each selected subdirectory. A further aspect of the disclosed technique is directed to grouping the file and subdirectory headers into file set data areas having respectively associated directory table areas that include directory table headers for the associated file set data area. Another aspect of the disclosed technique is direct- ed organizing the data storage media into storage seg- ments, each of which includes a data segment for storing the file set headers, and an overhead area for storing segment control and management information that includes a header link that contains the location of the first header in the segment. The header link information allows data recovery to continue after a non-recoverable segment.
