A computer system includes a timer which times out if the operating system does not periodically reset the timer. When the system fails and no longer resets the timer, the timer times out, and the computer is reset. The system performs its power on program and checks the memory array for bad memory blocks, which are mapped out of the memory. Next, the system alerts the operator of the failure using a pager. The system then reboots itself from a hard drive having two separate bootable partitions, one for the operating system in the first partition, and one for a diagnostics program in the second partition, so that an operator may diagnose and remedy the problem. The operator may set an indication of which partition to use for booting. The system further provides for remote access so that the operator may interact with the diagnostics program from a remote location.
Un système d'ordinateur comprend une temporisation qui réinitialise le système si ce dernier ne réinitialise pas ladite temporisation périodiquement. En cas de défaillance du système, la temporisation n'est plus réinitialisée, ce qui provoque la réinitialisation du système. Le système exécute son programme de démarrage et vérifie les blocs de mémoire afin d'en détecter les mauvais blocs, ces derniers étant retirés de la topographie de la mémoire. Ensuite, le système alerte l'opérateur et le met au courant de la défaillance à l'aide d'un dispositif de recherche de personnes. Le système redémarre automatiquement à partir d'un disque dur ayant deux partitions séparées d'initialisation, une première partition pour le système d'exploitation et une seconde partition pour un programme de diagnostic, ce qui permet à l'opérateur d'identifier le problème et de le résoudre. L'opérateur peut fournir une indication quant à la partition à utiliser pour l'initialisation. Le système assure également un accès à distance de sorte qu'une interaction est établie entre l'opérateur se trouvant en un point distant et le programme de diagnostic.
