A voice mail system computer network gateway server is disclosed. The server interfaces with a voice mail system, and exchanges voice mail messages with other gateway servers and voice mail systems using a computer network. The server includes a routing table for converting voice mail system addresses to computer network addresses. The routing table may be updated and exchanged between interconnected servers. As well, the server may broadcast received messages to multiple recipients. Methods used by such server are also disclosed. Messages exchanged may be encrypted. A method and system for exchanging cryptographic keys to facilitate such encryption are also disclosed.
