A method, apparatus, and computer implemented instructions in a data processing system for managing power consumption for a battery in the data processing system. An input identifying an amount of time required for running the data processing system is received. Responsive to the input, the available power in the data processing system is determined. An amount of power usage within the data processing system required to run the data processing system for the amount of time is identified using the available power if possible. The data processing system is set to the identified amount of power usage.
