Data compression usually requires complex searching or sorting of data. In accordance with preferred embodiments of the invention, a sort key includes the use of the sequence of the input data when sorting. This allows a sort, such as a radix sort, which is very simple, fast and well-suited for hardware implementation. Such a system leads to a faster data blocksort compression than is available in the prior art.
