A computerized method and apparatus for analyzing numerical data pertaining to a sample assay comprising at least one biological or chemical sample, with the data including a set of data pertaining to each respective sample, and each set of data including a plurality of values each representing a condition of the respective sample at a point in time. The method and apparatus assigns a respective numerical value to each of the data values, corrects the data values by removing an additive background value from each of the data values, compares a graph of the data values to a threshold value, and controls the system to indicate whether the sample has a predetermined characteristic based on a result of the comparison. Additionally, prior to the sample value being calculated, filtering, normalizing and other correcting operations can be performed on the data to correct extraneous values in the data which could adversely affect the accuracy of the results.
