Abstract The effectiveness of rubbing seals is based on the fact that an elasticsealing element is pressed against the sealing surface with a certain pressure. A good quality of the sealing surface finish is necessary to keep the frictional and the wear of the sealing element as low as possible. The use of rubbing seals is limited by the maximum circumferential speed at the sealing surface which depends on the type of sealing. The sealing properties are better than with non-rubbing seals.
