The invention provides compositions and methods for imparting translucent optical effects to transparent thermoplastic polymers. The compositions comprise the polymer and 0.01 to 10 parts per hundred by weight of a particulate, light-scattering material comprising an average particle diameter of from about 0.1 microns to about 200 microns. The particulate material may be organic or inorganic and be in the form of powders, flakes, platelets, fibers, whiskers, and mixtures of these. The translucent optical effects are obtainable in a continuum of very smooth to very grainy, depending on the type and concentration of the particles employed.
L'invention concerne des compositions utilisées pour donner un aspect optique translucide à des polymères thermoplastiques transparents. Lesdites compositions comprennent le polymère et 0,01 à 10 parties pour cent en poids de matière particulaire diffusant la lumière, présentant un diamètre de particule moyen d'environ 0,1 à 200 microns. Le matériau particulaire peut être organique ou inorganique et se présenter sous la forme de poudres, de flocons, de cristaux, de fibres, de fibres monocristallines et d'un mélange de ceux-ci. Les effets optiques translucides sont obtenus dans un continuum de particules très lisses à très granuleuses, selon leur type et leur concentration.
