Abstract of the Disclosure An improved concrete railroad tie having a rail-securing plate affixed at each end is provided which is easily and inexpensively adaptable to differ- ent railroad gauges and rail dimensions. Each plate has one or more apertures at each end thereof and also includes a pair of spaced-apart, upstanding eyelets secured to one face of the plate and configured for receiving a rail fastening clamp. The spacing between eyelets and the position of the eyelets on the plate is determined by the gauge and rail dimensions of the intended application. The concrete railroad tie has a number of elongated, tubular inserts imbedded in the concrete such that with the plate in place on the tie the apertures and inserts are aligned. The inserts are square in cross-section and include a number of intru- sions in opposite walls of the insert. The plate is secured to the tie by driving a standard railroad spike through the plate aperture into the insert with the intrusions seizing and securing the spike. Advantage- ously, this design allows concrete ties to be standar- dized and plates varied according to the gauge and rail dimensions desired.
