Currently available reinforcing devices for existing concrete structures include flat metal plates or similar smooth, rolled elements which are attached to the structures by an epoxy or glue. Bolts or inserts are used to attach the plates directly to the concrete to act in conjunction with the epoxy or glue. Such devices have several drawbacks, limiting the situations in which they can be used and increasing costs of installation. The drawbacks can be overcome by a simple reinforcing system for a concrete member including plates for mounting on opposite sides of a concrete member, an elongated bolt for extending through the concrete member and each of the plates, and reinforcing bars for mounting between one plate and the concrete member, the standard reinforcing bars extending between adjacent similar plates on such one side of the concrete member for reinforcing the latter. The system can include a variety of embodiments, including arcuate plates for increasing the hold on the reinforcing bars, new concrete reinforcing slabs for covering at least one of the plates, teeth on the plates for engaging the old concrete member and grout filled boxes for retaining bars against the concrete member.
