ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A concrete slab construction for use in a building in which columns are erected at intervals on the building site and a concrete floor slab is cast around the pillars wherein the columns are arranged in lines projecting outwardly from the slab, part of the concrete in the lower parts of the slab being replaced by polystyrene or like plastic material and the slab is post-tensioned by cables to create an arch effect in the concrete slab extending diagonally from column to column. In preferred constructions the slab acts as a plurality of ribbed arches tied at each column with cables, the cables following a sinuous path passing through the upper part of the slab on the column lines and through the lower part of the slab at the mid- column position.
