Disclosed is an aldol condensation process for the preparation of an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated ketone by reacting an aldehyde with a ketone with the use of a water-soluble basic catalyst in a tubular reactor. The process employs a two liquid phase reaction system comprising a continuous phase containing the catalyst and a dispersed phase containing at least one of the aldehyde and the ketone and is conducted at a load factor of the tubular reactor of at least 0.8. The .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated ketone can be produced with a high selectivity and at a high space-time yield.
