This invention pertains to the discovery that condensation polymers of an aldehyde and aromatic sulfonic acids and fractions thereof, such as formaldehyde naphthalenesulfonic acid condensation polymers, can abrogate HIV gp120 binding to CD4, as demonstrated in CD4/gp120 binding assays. In addition to gp120 binding inhibition, the compounds have been shown to inhibit HIV-induced syncytia formation and infectivity of CD4 cells. The use of this compound has been shown to be non-cytotoxic and non-inhibitory to antigen induced T lymphocyte proliferation. Based on these findings, these compounds can be used as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), as well as AIDS-related complex (ARC), AIDS-related dementia and non-symptomatic HIV infection. The compounds can also be used to treat blood preparations.
Cette invention se rapporte à la découverte selon laquelle les polymères de condensation d'un aldéhyde et des acides sulfoniques aromatiques et des fractions de ces polymères, tels que les polymères de condensation de formaldéhyde naphthalène-acide sulfonique, peuvent annuler la liaison de la gp120 du VIH au CD4 comme le démontrent les tests de liaison CD4/gp120. Outre le fait d'inhiber la liaison de gp120, on a découvert que ces composés inhibent la formation syncytiale induite par le VIH et le pouvoir infectant des cellules CD+, et leur utilisation s'est révélée non cytotoxique et non inhibitrice pour la prolifération des lymphocytes T induite par antigène. On a déduit de ces découvertes qu'on pouvait utiliser ces composés comme agents thérapeutiques pour traiter le syndrome d'immunodéficience acquise (SIDA) ainsi que le para-SIDA, la démence liée au SIDA et l'infection non symptomatique induite par le VIH. On peut également utiliser ces composés pour traiter des préparations sanguines.
