Abstract Compounds of general formula I Image (I) wherein Image represents one of the divalent groups Image , Image or Image X represents a =CH- group or, if Image represents an ortho-phenylene group, it may also be a nitrogen atom; A1 represents a lower alkylene group; A2 in the 2-position relative to the nitrogen of the saturated heterocyclic ring represents a lower alkylene group and in the 3- or 4-position represents a single bond or a methylene group; either R1 represents a lower alkyl group and R2 represents an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, hydroxycycloalkyl, cycloalkyl- methyl or hydroxycycloalkylmethyl group, or wherein R1 and R2 together with the nitrogen atom therebetween form a heterocyclic ring which may optionally also be interrupted by an oxygen atom or a N-CH- group; R3 represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a methyl group; R4 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group R5 represents a hydrogen or chlorine atom or a lower alkyl group; and Z represents either a single bond or an oxygen atom or a methylene or 1,2-ethylene group and their NR1R2-N-oxides have favourable effects on heart rate and in view of their lack of inhibitory effects on gastric acid secretion and salivation and the absence of any mydriatic effects, they are suitable as vagal pacemakers for the treatment of bradycardia and bradyarrhythmia in both human and veterinary medicine.
