A non-sintered nickel electrode for use in alkaline storage batteries is provided. An active material of the electrode takes the form of composite particles consisting of grains of nickel hydroxide or grains mainly constituted by nickel hydroxide, each of which has a surface formed with an electric conduction layer consisting of a cobalt compound containing 0.1 to 10 % by weight sodium. The electrode is thereby adapted to make an active material available in a high degree because the pulverulent active material consists of grains, each of which is coated with an electric conduction layer having a high electric conductivity. Because the electrode is non-sintered, the highly porous substrate allows an active material having a relatively large bulk density to be used during manufacture. The presence of sodium in the electric conduction layer improves specific electric conductivity of the electrode relative to other non-sintered nickel electrodes.
