A pig suitable for use in cleaning deposits and build-up from a pipeline and suited for applications wherein the pipeline has a series of bends or even right angle corners is also suited for ensuring that the pig minimally scratches or scores the interior surface of the pipeline, to ensure a longer usable life of the pipeline. Studs in the pig are formed to a specific hardness appropriate to the pipeline to be cleaned. The pipeline's hardness can be checked using a Rockwell or Brinell hardness test and the studs are heat treated to the desired hardness. The desired hardness is preferably 5% less than the hardness of the pipe, so that the studs are harder than the build-up.
