An apparatus and method for providing confidential viewing of a fundamental image (65) on an image display device (1) utilizing spatial multiplexing image modification, whereby fundamental image components (67, 73) of the fundamental image are spatially multiplexed or combined (71, 77) with appropriately determined inverted image components (69, 75) so as to neutralize the fundamental image (65) and generate a combined image (79) that appears substantially featureless to the naked eye. The display pixels aligned with the fundamental image components (F11) are cross-polarized relative to the adjacent pixels (I21) aligned with the inverted image components, thereby providing for extraction of the fundamental image by an authorized viewer wearing appropriate eyewear (63) polarized to correlate with the state of polarization of the pixels aligned with the fundamental image components. Enhanced security may be provided by utilizing a variable polarizer to alter the state of polarization of the respective display regions, or by altering the position of fundamental and inverse image components to align with differently polarized display regions. Extraction of the fundamental image may then be accomplished by using active polarized eyewear synchronized to correlate in polarization with the pixels aligned with the fundamental image components.
L'invention concerne un appareil et un procédé permettant la visualisation confidentielle d'une image fondamentale sur un dispositif d'affichage d'image faisant appel à une modification d'image par multiplexage spatial, les composants de l'image fondamentale étant soumis à un multiplexage spatial ou combinés de manière appropriée avec des composants d'image inversés déterminés de cette image, et alignés avec des zones/pixels d'affichage adjacent(e)s d'un dispositif d'affichage d'image de façon à neutraliser l'image fondamentale et à générer une image combinée apparaissant sensiblement sans relief à l'oeil nu. Les pixels d'affichage alignés avec les composants d'image fondamentale sont soumis à une polarisation croisée par rapport aux pixels adjacents alignés avec les composants d'image inversés, d'où l'extraction de l'image fondamentale par un utilisateur autorisé portant des lunettes appropriées polarisées en vue d'une corrélation avec l'état de polarisation des pixels alignés avec les composants d'image fondamentale. On peut obtenir une sécurité améliorée par utilisation d'un polariseur variable permettant de modifier l'état de polarisation des zones d'affichage respectives, ou par modification de la position des composants d'image fondamentale et inverse en vue d'un alignement avec des zones d'affichage polarisées différemment. L'extraction de l'image fondamentale peut ensuite être réalisée par utilisation de lunettes polarisées actives synchronisées en vue d'une corrélation en polarisation avec les pixels alignés avec les composants d'image fondamentale.
