A state changeable memory alloy and device employing same. The memory alloy is capable of changing from a first state to a second state in response to the input of energy, such as projected optical beam energy, electrical energy or thermal energy. The alloy has a first detectable characteristic when in the first state and a second detectable characteristic when in the second state. It is further characterized in that the first state comprises a single phase, and the second state comprises either: (1) a single phase having the same composition as the first phase or (2) a plurality of phases which have substantially similar crystallization temperatures and kinetics.

L'invention est constituée par un alliage à mémoire de forme et par un dispositif utilisant cet alliage. L'alliage en cause peut passer d'un premier état à un second état en réponse à un apport d'énergie, cette énergie pouvant être celle d'un faisceau lumineux projeté, de l'énergie électrique ou de l'énergie thermique. L'alliage a une première caractéristique détectable quand il est dans son premier état et une seconde caractéristiques détectable quand il est dans son second état. Il est de plus caractérisé par le fait que le premier état n'a qu'une seule phase et que le second état peut avoir 1) soit une seule phase de même composition que celle du premier état, 2) soit une pluralité de phases ayant substantiellement la même température et la même cinétique de cristallisation.
