Methods of treating animals to prevent or treat the adverse effects of type I or IgE mediated hypersensitivity in the animal consist of administering to the animal a safe and effective amount of a conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) or a substance which is converted in the animal into CLA. Methods of increasing the white blood cell count in a mammal and preserving white blood cells with CLA also are disclosed.

Méthode de traitement des animaux à des fins de prévention ou de traitement des effets néfastes de l'hypersensibilité indirecte de types I ou à médiation IgE chez l'animal, qui consiste à administrer à l'animal une dose sûre et efficace d'un mélange acide linoléique (CLA) conjugué ou d'une substance se transformant en CLA dans le corps de l'animal. Sont également proposées des méthodes d'accroissemen t du chiffre des leucocytes chez les mammifères et de préservation des leucocytes au moyen de CLA.
