An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch (12) in an ATM network is provided with a connection admission control function which is periodically modified in a predetermined manner in dependence on a measurement of bandwidth utilization of the ATM switch (12) over an interval encompassing a number of call connections. The ATM switch (12) implements an effective bandwidth type connection admission control function which bestows an amount of bandwidth to each of a number of connection types which are supported. One or more higher layer connection admission control functions are provided which are responsive to traffic fluctuations to modify effective bandwidths for connection types stored by the ATM switch in a predetermined manner.

L'invention concerne un sélecteur ATM (mode de transfert asynchrone) (12) dans un réseau ATM, ce sélecteur comprenant une fonction de contrôle d'admission des connexions (CAC) modifiée périodiquement de manière prédéfinie, en fonction des mesures concernant l'utilisation de la largeur de bande dudit sélecteur ATM (12) sur un intervalle couvrant plusieurs communications établies. Ce sélecteur ATM (12) met en oeuvre une fonction de contrôle d'admission des connexions du type largeur de bande effective, qui attribue une certaine largeur de bande à chaque connexion établie. Une ou plusieurs fonctions de contrôle d'admission des connexions des couches supérieures permettent en outre de répondre aux fluctuations du trafic, afin de modifier les largeurs de bande effectives des types de connexion stockés par ledit sélecteur ATM de manière prédéfinie.
