An elongated handle has a proximal elongated plastic section joined to a distal metal section. The plastic section is provided with a plurality of flexible, longitudinally ribbed tabs extending outwardly thereof, at least one of which has an outwardly extending cross longitudinal rib. The distal section has internal longitudinal grooves that receive the longitudinal ribs, and also has a circumferential groove formed in its internal surface for engaging the cross longitudinal rib. A self threading screw from the distal portion into the proximal portion engages the tabs, urging them outward into locking engagement with the longitudinal and circumferential grooves. The screw distributes mechanical stresses away from the metal-plastic interface, and is isolated from the distal section by the tabs, so that the screw does not loosen when the handle is subjected to flexion and torsion.
