The present invention comprises a connector comprising shape memory material such as a shape memory alloy, an optical fiber conduit and an axial stress opening traversing the connector from the connector surface to the fiber conduit and along at least a portion of a longitudinal length of the connector. The fiber conduit is dimensioned for optical fibers and to secure two optical fibers in abutment alignment for light signal transmission from one fiber to the other, with minimal attenuation and for securing the fibers without crushing or other damage to the fibers. In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a method of bringing optical fibers in abutment connection for signal conduction using a connector as above, wherein a wedging force is applied to the stress opening, whereby the wedging force will induce separation of the side walls of the slot and expansion of the fiber conduit for insertion of optical fibers and their abutment connection and securing of the fibers in abutment connection, when the wedging force is removed. Alternatively, a force may be applied to either side of the stress opening to again expand the opening and fiber conduit for the purpose of placement of optical fibers within the fiber conduit. Removal of the force will allow retention of the fibers in abutment connection of the fibers. In a still further embodiment, the present invention relates to an apparatus which applies a wedging force to a stress opening for expansion of a fiber conduit and insertion of optical fibers and their retention, light transmission abutment and connection in a connector as above.
La présente invention concerne un connecteur comprenant un matériau à mémoire de forme tel qu'un alliage à mémoire de forme, un conduit de fibres optiques et une ouverture à contrainte axiale traversant le connecteur de la surface de ce dernier au conduit de fibres sur au moins une partie d'une longueur longitudinale du connecteur. Le conduit de fibres est dimensionné pour des fibres optiques et pour fixer deux fibres optiques bout à bout en alignement pour la transmission de signaux optiques d'une fibre à l'autre avec une atténuation minimale et pour fixer les fibres sans écrasement ou sans causer d'autres dégâts aux fibres. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, la présente invention concerne un procédé pour mettre des fibres optiques bout à bout pour la conduction de signaux au moyen d'un connecteur de ce type. Dans ledit procédé, l'ouverture à contrainte est soumise à une force d'écartement qui provoque la séparation des parois latérales de la fente et l'expansion du conduit de fibres pour l'insertion de fibres optiques et leur aboutement et pour maintenir les fibres bout à bout, lorsque la force d'écartement est supprimée. En alternative, une force peut être appliquée à l'un ou l'autre des côtés de l'ouverture à contrainte pour agrandir à nouveau l'ouverture et le conduit de fibres dans le but de placer des fibres optiques dans ce dernier. La suppression de la force permet le maintien des fibres mises bout à bout. Dans encore un autre mode de réalisation, la présente invention concerne un appareil qui applique une force d'écartement à une ouverture à contrainte pour l'expansion d'un conduit de fibres, l'insertion de fibres optiques et leur maintien, et l'aboutement des fibres pour la transmission de la lumière dans un connecteur de ce type.
