Cooling systems to reduce the dry-bulb temperature of ambient air by exchange of heat energy between air and water are popular for their low electric energy demand. In their operation, however, larger volumes of water have to be continuously drained to maintain the content of dissolved hard water minerals on a safe level. One method of this invention provides for reduced continuous discharge of process water, when specific chemical agent is employed, conserving thus precious drinking water. The other described method of invention, using another blend of chemicals, provides for manual, or for automatic operation of evaporative cooler, featured without continuous draining of circulating process water, and the volume of conserved water in this method is the largest possible. Selection of chemicals for best results in conserving water by these two methods is provided, and inexpensive, simple device for controlled introduction of chemical agent is also presented.
